Dynamite Feed Mill Letter
May 28, 2008
With attention focused on the recent national brand feeds recall (see link at the end for more
information), we want to reassure our customers that Dynamite's milling practices and
ingredient standards are second to none.
As the owners of our own mill which is totally chemical and toxin-free, we are able to control
our feeds start to finish. We do not subcontract our formulas out to other facilities over which
we have no control. We also purchase only from reputable U.S. suppliers, and never buy
damaged or discounted ingredients. In many cases we own outright the sources of our major
feed ingredients.
Regarding quality control and freshness, 90% of Dynamite ingredients are less than 30 days
old and many of the products you receive were manufactured less than 2 weeks before. This
is a level of freshness unheard of in our industry. All of our products are touched, smelled and
scrutinized by our knowledgeable staff on a regular basis. We randomly test all ingredients to
ensure they meet Dynamite standards of quality. During and after the registration process
several states randomly test our feeds for aflatoxin—in over 30 years we have never had a
positive test.
Finally, we absolutely NEVER least-cost formulate. This common practice in the feed industry
involves altering formulas from batch to batch by substituting cheaper ingredients when
commodities fluctuate. While this practice is legal and standard in the industry, Dynamite
believes it creates an opportunity for error and clearly lowers the quality of the feed. This
practice is not in the best interest of the animals. When you buy Dynamite feeds, you can rest-
assured you will get consistent, high quality products from batch to batch.
We first published the following letter on April 9, 2003 in response to a tragic loss to the alpaca
community due to a feed cross-contamination in another mill. It serves as a reminder that
Dynamite’s Feed Mill really is different.

Re: Recent Alpaca Tragedy
To Whom It May Concern:
We at Dynamite Marketing are saddened by the recent loss at several Alpaca ranches in the
United States due to the cross-contamination of feeds. Money cannot replace the gene bank,
nor the emotional loss of this tragedy.
There are a number of things that could have been done to prevent this tragedy. As a feed
company, established in 1933, we have seen almost every loss to livestock imaginable. While
we have never personally experienced these losses with our feeds, we have chosen to
separate ourselves from the dangerous, industry-wide practices by adopting manufacturing
methods that make the recent Alpaca injuries nearly impossible. The main dangers as we see
them in the feed industry are as follows:
Urea Nitrogen
Urea nitrogen has been used in the bovine industry since about World War II as an artificial
form of protein. Some animals, such as cows, have the ability to recycle urine to conserve
water and nitrogen, which is converted to protein. Most companies that make cattle feed use
urea in this manner. Other animals, such as horses or alpacas, cannot manage excess urea
and cross-contamination can cause severe nitrogen toxicity and kidney failure. It is for this
reason that in 1973 urea was eliminated from all feed formulas in our mill.
Antibiotics
Antibiotics are used in many types of feeds, not only as disease cures, but also as disease
preventatives and even growth stimulators. While some antibiotics can be used for multiple
species, some are species-specific and can be toxic to other animals. For example,
Coccidiastats, antibiotics used to treat Coccidiosis in poultry and swine, can be toxic to horses,
llamas, alpacas and other animals, especially the recently domesticated species. It is for this
reason that we discontinued the use of all drugs and antibiotics in our feed mill years ago.
Meat and Bone Meal
By definition, meat and bone meal is a multiple source of protein derived from the processing
of animal carcasses. This material can include animals that are deceased from disease and
even pet animals that have been euthanized. Meat and Bone Meal has been used for
decades as a cheap source of protein for poultry, swine, even rabbits and cattle. With the
recent Mad Cow Disease, Hoof and Mouth Disease and other scares associated with meat and
bone meal, we decided several years ago to eliminate all animal by-products from our mill.
Insecticides
Most feed mills, to prevent infestation of grain weevils and other insects, use highly toxic
fumigants to treat stored grain. While the major part of these fumigants dissipates, it stands to
reason that some residuals will remain on the grain. We eliminated fumigants in our mill over a
decade ago.
Preservatives
In order to ensure shelf life, most feed mills use toxic preservatives such as ethoxiquin, BHA,
BHT and formaldehyde. Feeds ordered from our mill are typically less than four weeks old
when they are shipped and Dynamite Feed Mill uses only the natural preservatives, Vitamin C
and Vitamin E.
One might ask why Dynamite has chosen to eliminate the elements listed above from our mill
entirely. Why not just be careful not to cross-contaminate? To answer this question, you must
first understand the feed milling process. All feeds are made in the same mixer and conveyed
through the same augers. A flush is used between batches by running a relatively inert grain
through the system to remove traces of the previous feed batch, but it is impossible to remove
everything. Therefore, if a feed has been made for poultry, using meat and bone meal and
antibiotics, the following feed batch could contain as much as 1-5% of the previous feed
manufactured, even after the system is flushed! The only way for any mill to make certain that
they aren’t cross-contaminating feeds is to remove all harmful elements and replace them with
high-end, safe alternatives.
We are heavy-hearted over the recent occurrences in the feed industry, but it has been a
good reminder to us all about the risks of feed cross-contamination. At Dynamite Marketing,
we are in a unique position because we are one of the few mills that focus on specialty feeds
(Horse, Alpaca, Llama, Zoo animals, etc…). We can, therefore, fulfill my personal conviction of
providing the highest quality feeds available. In fact, to my knowledge, we are the only urea-
free, antibiotic-free, meat and bone meal-free, insecticide-free, and unnatural preservative-
free feed mill in the United States. We will never compromise that conviction. You have my
word.
